A Dagartech generator set guarantees the continuity of a world-leading visual effects company’s data centre

Continuity of electrical supply is essential for any <em>data centre</em>, where valuable information and large volumes of data are managed. Increasingly, industries are establishing their own data centres, including the film industry. To ensure an uninterrupted power supply, Dagartech custom-designed and manufactured a 730 kVA generator set for one of the world’s leading visual effects companies, based in New Zealand, integrating it with UPS systems and providing full protection for the entire infrastructure.

This project is a practical example of how a generator set designed and custom-built by Dagartech helps to ensure reliable and continuous power in data centres and leading companies in demanding sectors. Having a bespoke generator set not only protects critical information but also ensures business continuity even under extreme conditions.

Customer needs

The generator set was developed following a consultancy and analysis phase with the client, ensuring maximum efficiency and reliability, as well as meeting their operational objectives:

  • DGVS 730 ST GGK 415/240V 50Hz, adapted for critical operation in data centres.
  • DSE 8620 (+PMG) synchronisation kit for precise synchronisation with the grid and other generators.
  • Volt-free contacts for GCB and MCB, allowing safe control of connection and disconnection of essential loads.
  • DSE 890 control system, with advanced monitoring, alarms, and historical logs for predictive maintenance.
  • Generator impregnation system level 4 (premium level).
  • 495-litre fuel tank with a 6-way valve kit, ensuring extended generator autonomy through integration with external fuel tanks.

This bespoke design allows the generator set to operate precisely according to the data centre’s demands, optimising efficiency and ensuring maximum reliability for the installation.

Advanced operating modes

    The generator set offers two operating modes tailored to different scenarios:

    1. Close transition (sync): start-up on mains failure with no blackout on return. This is the unit’s standard operating mode.
    2. Remote start in island mode: test mode with generator start triggered by the BMS signal. After start-up, the generator synchronises with the grid and absorbs the load at a rate of 6% per second up to 400 kW. When the signal ends, the process is reversed.

    Thanks to integration with UPS systems, the generator set prevents voltage loss both on failure and on return, ensuring that critical systems continue operating without interruption.

    The client performs monthly remote tests, verifying that this generator set for data centres responds correctly to all operational requirements.
